Dear Dylan, I have just read your moving tribute to Aileen. I am sorry that Anita and I were not there to hear it in person – but you were in our thoughts yesterday and indeed have been for the past two weeks. I have recalled many happy memories during this time – Aileen was such a good friend, especially to Anita and although they had not seen each other much in the last 20 years, she was never far from Anita’s thoughts. It is an unhappy reality of life that we often spend least time with those whose friendship and company we value the most, and Aileen was certainly a case in point. We will always treasure the special occasions that we did share with both of you, especially the Magdalene Ball and our two wonderful stays in Calgary. I am sorry that there were not more occasions like these – we were ultimately so close geographically yet I guess so busy with our family lives that we never found the time. Yet seeing Aileen in London last year, the years seemed to melt away as her sunny persona shone out around the room, belying her suffering. We will never forget Aileen’s warmth, humour and kindness and feel fortunate to be counted amongst her friends. You and your children will remain in our thoughts – I hope it will not be too long before we meet again. With best wishes, Phil
